FAQ's
1. What credentials does an International Learning Exchange participant need to have?
International Learning Exchange participants (Trainees) must have a degree/diploma in a human services/social services related field or 5 years of work experience in the training field in which you are interested. In addition, they should be flexible and enthusiastic about professional development and cross-cultural learning.
2. How is my housing provided?
International Learning Exchange arranges, with the placement agency, for housing for all program participants. In all cases, apartments/houses are rented, furnished, and ready to be occupied.
3. What is the training stipend?
All program participants, in addition to their housing being paid for, are provided with a monthly stipend for living expenses.
4. Is health insurance required for the J-1 visa?
Yes, all J-1 trainees are required to have health insurance. International Learning Exchange provides for health insurance for all participants.
5. Can you explain the health insurance that is provided?
The name of the health insurance provider is International Medical Group - Patriotic America (www.imglobal.com). Health insurance coverage will become effective with day one of the program and will end on the last day of program participation. Listed below is a summary of the benefits provided;
- Policy Year Maximum Benefits: $50,000
- Deductible: intial $100.00
- Emergency Room Deductible: $250.00 for each emergency room visit
- Maximum Benefits per Injury or Sickness: $50,000
- Repatriation of Remains: Maximum Benefits up to $25,000
- Medical Evacuation: Maximum Lifetime Benefits up to $50,000
- Prescription Drugs
- Will cover medical expenses for sickness and injury only.
- Physician office visits: There is an intial $100.00 deductible. If the doctor is in the Preferred Provider Organization Network, the plan pay 90% of eligible expenses up to $5000 USD, then 100% up to Policy Maximum ($50,000). If the doctor is outside the PPO network then the plan pays 80% of eligible expenses up to $5000 USD, then 100% up to Policy Maximum ($50,000).
Some medical expenses that are not covered:
- Pre-existing conditions.
- Dental Care.
- Eye Care.
- Maternity and newborn care.
- Routine physical examinations.
- Willfully self-inflicted injury or illness.
- Diagnosis and treatment of acne and sebaceous cyst.
- Plastic or cosmetic surgery.
- Organ or tissue transplant.
- Injury sustained while under the influence of or wholly or partly to the effects of intoxicating liquor or drugs.
- Injury sustained while taking part in mountaineering where ropes or guides are normally used, amateur athletics or professional athletics, aviation (except when traveling solely as a passenger in a commercial aircraft) hang gliding and parachuting, mountain biking, rock climbing, snow skiing, bicycle motor cross, bobsledding, canyoning, caving, high diving, heli-skiing, hot air ballooning, in-line skating, jet skiing, kayaking , and water skiing and snowboarding, racing by horse, motorcycle, spelunking and subaqua pursuits involving underwater breathing appartus and bungee jumping.
6. How many sick days and vacation days do I have?
Vacation time and sick time vary from agency to agency. In general, International Learning Exchange participants have the same vacation and sick time as their American colleagues. Holidays are considered separate from vacation time. Vacation and sick time is accrued as you spend time at your placement. It is important to understand the agency's policy around the vacation, sick, and holiday time at the beginning of your exchange program.
7. Do I need a car?
Yes, you absolutely need a car for transportation. For a dependable car, plan on spending $3000 to $4000 (USD). Staff, as part of the orientation process, will help you with your purchase options. Keep in mind that you will need money to register your vehicle and to purchase auto insurance as well. Auto insurance will cost somewhere between $900.00 (USD) to $1800.00(USD) for the year, which can be paid on a monthly, quarterly, or yearly basis. This cost varies from state to state and it also varies depending on your age, the make and year of the car, etc. In some states, by acquiring your state driver's license, you will be able to lower the cost of your auto insurance.
8. Do I need an International Driver's License?
Yes, you need to have an International Driver's License to drive your vehicle in the U.S.A. and to participate in the program. Without an international driver's license you cannot legally drive in the United States. You'll also need to have your driver's license from your home country to legally drive in the United States.
